More than one-million fly-tipping incidents blight the UK

Fly-tipping in the UK remains above one-million incidents per year, new figures have revealed.

Official statistics published by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs confirmed incidents of illegal dumping of waste has declined by 4% compared to the previous year. The most common place for fly-tipping remained on highways, accounting for more than 40% of all incidents in 2021/22.

The most common size category for fly-tipping incident was the equivalent to a ‘small van load’, which comprised of 32% of all incidents. While 26% were the equivalent of a ‘car boot or less’. The figures do not include dumping of waste on private land. Local authorities appear to be getting tougher on the issue, with 507,000 enforcement actions taken, an increase of 11%. The number of fixed penalty notices issued rose by 58% to 57,700 and court fines nearly tripled from 621 in 2020/21 to 1,798 in 2021/22 (190%).
