The Sheehan Group’s guide to Self-Storage

What is self-storage?

Self-storage units provide a space to store items for a period and can be an ideal solution to a variety of situations, from moving home, renovating, or commercial storage needs. Self-storage is cost-effective and provides storage for items of most sizes.

Via our self-storage service, Oxford Container Storage, we provide clean and secure containers for as long as you need them.

If you are considering or require self-storage here are some useful tips to help you get the most from your unit.

How does self-storage work?

Our self-storage agreements are straight-forward, and the containers provides a simple solution to a multitude of storage needs. Once you have your container you will have access Monday to Friday between 7am and 6pm and can be accessed without a prior arrangement and without an additional charge. A multilock padlock is provided and each container is separate, meaning you have direct and easy access to it always. There is a minimum hire period of one month, which is £175 with a £400 deposit. A 5% discount is offered for a full year rental when paid in full at the point of purchase.

What type of self-storage is available?

Oxford Container Storage provides individual storage containers with a cubic capacity of 33.22m3. This is the ideal size to fit bulky items such as garden furniture, children’s’ outdoor play equipment, sports equipment (for example bikes surf boards and golf clubs) and household furniture.

To provide an idea of its size, one container can accommodate standard furniture from two traditional large bedrooms, including two assembled double beds, two double wardrobes, four bedside tables and two chests of draws.

Our security gated site is monitored 24/7 via a CCTV system to help ensure your items are stored securely.

What can be stored?

Any item can be stored, except livestock, or illegal, flammable, or perishable items.

What about Insurance for items held in self-storage?

We advise to firstly check whether you are covered under your household insurance at the
appropriate level.

How can items best be stored in self-storage?

Oxford Container Storage advise using pallets to ensure you maximise the space in your storage unit. Begin by packing the rear of the storage unit and place heavier and bulkier items in first and put lighter and fragile belongings on top. Gaps can also be filled with small items. If you are storing any electrical appliances make sure they are clean, dry and empty and wedge doors open to allow air to circulate. Any garden or metal equipment should be clean and wiped with an oily rag to prevent rusting, if they are to be stored for a long time.

It is worth taking the time to label boxes on the top and side, so you can access items easily later. Remember to fill the box completely to avoid any of them collapsing when stacked on top of each other. If you need to access your items while they are in storage it is advised to leave some space to move items around.
